Students should consult a faculty advisor or an academic advisor early in their program of study. This program is designed to grant an A.S. Degree and prepare the student to transfer to a baccalaureate program in nursing. These courses are generally required by most B.S. nursing degrees; however, the student should check with the school to which they are transferring for specific requirements. Student should make contact early with the school to which they intend to transfer in order to meet its application requirements. Only college-level courses apply toward completion of this curriculum and the graduation requirements for the A.S.

Program Requirements

Core Curriculum Requirements (42 Credit Hours)

Communication

ENGL 1301 - English Composition I 3 credit hours. and
Choose one from the following:
SPCH 1315 - Public Speaking 3 credit hours.
SPCH 1321 - Business and Professional Communication 3 credit hours.

Mathematics

Choose one course from the following:

MATH 1314 - College Algebra 3 credit hours.
MATH 1342 - Introductory Statistics 3 credit hours.

Life and Physical Sciences

Choose two courses from the following:

BIOL 1406 - General Biology I 4 credit hours.
CHEM 1405 - Introductory Chemistry I 4 credit hours. or
CHEM 1406 - Introductory Chemistry (Allied Health Emphasis) 4 credit hours.
Additional 2 hours will apply to Major Requirements.

Language, Philosophy and Culture

Choose one course from the following:

PHIL 1301 - Introduction to Philosophy 3 credit hours.
PHIL 2306 - Introduction to Ethics 3 credit hours.

Creative Arts

Choose one course from the following:

ARTS 1301 - Art Appreciation 3 credit hours.
ARTS 1303 - Art History I (Prehistoric to the 14th Century) 3 credit hours.
ARTS 1304 - Art History II (14th Century to the Present) 3 credit hours.
DRAM 1310 - Introduction to Theatre 3 credit hours.
DRAM 2361 - Theatre History I 3 credit hours.
MUSI 1306 - Music Appreciation 3 credit hours.

American History

Choose two courses from the following:

HIST 1301 - United States History I 3 credit hours.
HIST 1302 - United States History II 3 credit hours.
HIST 2301 - Texas History 3 credit hours.

Government/Political Science

Two courses.

GOVT 2305 - Federal Government 3 credit hours.
GOVT 2306 - Texas Government 3 credit hours.

Social and Behavioral Sciences

One course.

PSYC 2301 - Introduction to Psychology 3 credit hours.

Component Area Option (CAO) A

Choose one course from the following:

ENGL 1302 - English Composition II 3 credit hours.
ENGL 2311 - Technical and Business Writing 3 credit hours.

Component Area Option (CAO) B

Any approved course from one of the above Core Curriculum Required Courses not also being used to satisfy another core requirement.

Other Degree Requirements

An additional 16 semester hours suggested from the following:
