Students should consult a faculty advisor or an academic advisor early in their program of study. The Criminal Justice program offers instruction and training for individuals who are seeking careers in Criminal Justice or related fields. The A.A.S. degree not only prepares a student to sit for the Texas Peace Officer Licensing Examination, but also provides a faculty advisor early in their program of study to develop a degree plan. Deviations from the courses listed require a recommendation from the faculty advisor and approval of the Associate Vice President for Workforce Development.

Program Requirements

Core Curriculum Requirements (15 Credit Hours)

Composition: 3 Hours

Choose one course from the following:

ENGL 1301 - English Composition I 3 credit hours.
ENGL 2311 - Technical and Business Writing 3 credit hours.

Mathematics, Science or Computer Technology: 6 Hours

MATH 1314 - College Algebra 3 credit hours. or
MATH 1342 - Introductory Statistics 3 credit hours. (preferred)
BCIS 1305 - Business Computer Applications 3 credit hours. or
COSC 1301 - Microcomputer Applications 3 credit hours.

Language, Philosophy and Culture or Creative Arts Elective: 3 Credit Hours

Choose one course from the following:

ARTS 1301 - Art Appreciation 3 credit hours.
ARTS 1303 - Art History I (Prehistoric to the 14th Century) 3 credit hours.
ARTS 1304 - Art History II (14th Century to the Present) 3 credit hours.
DRAM 1310 - Introduction to Theatre 3 credit hours.
DRAM 2361 - Theatre History I 3 credit hours.
ENGL 2322 - British Literature I 3 credit hours.
ENGL 2323 - British Literature II 3 credit hours.
ENGL 2327 - American Literature I 3 credit hours.
ENGL 2328 - American Literature II 3 credit hours.
ENGL 2332 - World Literature I 3 credit hours.
ENGL 2333 - World Literature II 3 credit hours.
HIST 2321 - World Civilizations I 3 credit hours.
HIST 2322 - World Civilizations II 3 credit hours.
HUMA 1301 - Appreciation of the Humanities: Pre-Classical through Renaissance 3 credit hours.

CJLE 2421 - Texas Peace Officer Law 4 credit hours.
CJLE 2420 - Texas Peace Officer Procedures 4 credit hours.
CRIJ 2328 - Police Systems and Practices 3 credit hours.
CRIJ 2314 - Criminal Investigation 3 credit hours.
CRIJ 2323 - Legal Aspects of Law Enforcement 3 credit hours.
CJLE 1194 - Special Topics: Criminal Justice Career Exploration 1 credit hour.
Note: The following CJLE or CJCR courses can fulfill part of the Criminal Justice Course Concentration Requirements above with Criminal Justice instructor approval but cannot exceed 6 credit hours:
CJCR 1380 - Cooperative Education - Corrections/Correctional Administration 3 credit hours.
CJCR 2380 - Cooperative Education - Corrections/Correctional Administration 3 credit hours.
CJLE 1384 - Cooperative Education - Law Enforcement/Police Science 3 credit hours.

Warning: it is possible CJLE and CJCR course credits may not transfer to an upper-level learning institution without that institition’s prior approval.
