BIOL 2420 - Microbiology for Non-Science Majors

4 credit hours.
Lecture/Lab/Clinical: Three hours of lecture and three hours of lab each week.
This course covers basic microbiology and immunology and is primarily directed at pre-nursing, pre-allied health, and non-science majors. It provides an introduction to historical concepts of the nature of microorganisms, microbial diversity, the importance of microorganisms and acellular agents in the biosphere, and their roles in human and animal diseases. Major topics include bacterial structure as well as growth, physiology, genetics, and biochemistry of microorganisms. Emphasis is on medical microbiology, infectious diseases, and public health.  The natural sciences and allied health divisions of the college strongly recommend that CHEM 1406  or CHEM 1411 be the first course in the pre-nursing/pre-MLT sequence and be taken prior to enrolling in BIOL 2401.  The topics covered in CHEM 1406 or CHEM 1411 are foundational to the following courses:  Nutrition, A & P I, A & P II, and Microbiology. (Fall, Spring, Summer)

Note: Additional course fee(s) required.
